The user languages, web shop languages and user culture tabs

User languages decide what languages will be made available for all modules of the system except for those that belong to the the web shop modules. This includes features like languages of user resources, languages in which reports can be added, languages in which questionnaires can be generated and so on.

Web shop languages decide what languages are available for web shop modules, like the actual shopping and payment pages as well as the administration pages for setting up delivery types, discounts, products and so on. From version 5.3 the choice of language will also influence the flags shown on the shopping site. In earlier versions it is unfortunately still hard-coded and cannot be changed.

Cultures decide how date formatting and decimal formatting looks for users. Currently the only place in the system where there is a culture option is for users in the user resource dialog.

Since all three tabs work in exactly the same way we will below just explain the logic of all of them in the same way.

On the interface of all language/culture settings, there are 2 lists as shown above.

Available languages: are the languages available in the system but not in use for the site yet. If you want one or more than one language to be applied to a certain site, you can highlight it/them and click the arrow pointing to the right. The chosen languages will then be moved to the list on the right called “Selected languages”.

Selected languages: are the languages which have been chosen to be used for the site. Normally these languages will be presented in “language controls” or drop-down lists.

The order of the languages in the drop-down lists can be managed by changing their positions in the list of selected languages by using the up and down arrows. Moving a language up means swapping its position with the one which is immediately above it. Similarly, moving a language down means swapping its position with the one which is immediately below it.

You may want to deactivate one or more than one language in this list, and this can be done by highlighting the desired one(s) and clicking the arrow pointing to the left, which has now been made active. The highlighted language(s) will immediately be moved to the list on the left for available languages.

However, removing a language from the selected languages is not always possible. You cannot remove an item which is in use somewhere on your site (for example as the language of a user). If one of the languages you choose to remove is already in use by another module, you will be presented by an error message as shown below:
